The Essence of Thiruppugazh 952 Eera Modu Siriththu (Kiranur)
This Thiruppugazh, composed by the saint-poet Arunagirinathar, is a profound reflection on the spiritual dangers of lust and a glorious tribute to Lord Murugan residing in the temple town of Keeranur. The hymn follows a classic structural duality: the first half vividly details the deceptive allure of worldly pleasures—specifically through the metaphor of courtesans—while the second half contrasts this with a majestic description of cosmic mythology and divine grace.
Here is a deep exploration of the song, categorized into eight thematic headings.
1. The Core Philosophy of the Keeranur Hymn
The poem opens by addressing one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual liberation: the illusion of lust. Arunagirinathar paints a realistic picture of how the human mind is easily ensnared by superficial physical beauty and deceptive charm. By exposing the hollowness of transactional affection, he urges the seeker to turn away from worldly entanglements and seek the eternal, unconditional grace of the divine. The hymn serves as both a warning against moral decay and a pathway to salvation.
2. The Illusion of Warmth and Artistic Deceit
The first few lines describe the calculated behavior of courtesans who lure unsuspecting men. They smile with feigned warmth and moisture in their eyes, creating an illusion of genuine affection that actually tortures the minds of their victims. To further captivate their targets, they employ the arts of melodious singing and enchanting dance. These performances are designed not out of love, but as psychological tools to melt the hearts of men and draw them into a trap of infatuation.
3. False Flattery and Arrow-like Glances
To feed the male ego, these women will flatter anyone who approaches them, regardless of their actual worth, comparing them to Manmathan, the handsome God of Love. Arunagirinathar describes how they cast sharp, darting glances that strike like arrows to intimidate and mesmerize the beholder. By standing strategically at the entrances of their homes along the streets, they cast their nets wide, waiting for vulnerable men to pass by and fall prey to their calculated charms.
4. The Transactional Mind and Physical Enticement
While their outward demeanor is full of passion, their minds are entirely transactional and contradictory. Inwardly, they are constantly evaluating a man’s wealth and fixing a price for their company. To incite intense lust, they deliberately shake their jewel-adorned chests, sensuously loosen and retie their flower-braided hair, and let their garments slip only to wrap them around their waists again. Every physical movement is a deliberate, choreographed act of seduction designed to cloud a man’s judgment.
5. A Plea for Deliverance from Sorrow
Despite their sweet words that seem to echo true desire, and their dramatic gestures of falling upon men in a show of intimacy, the ultimate result is profound sorrow and financial ruin. The poet asks a critical, soul-searching question: “Should I ever associate with those who learn and practice such deceptive, ruinous arts?” This marks the emotional turning point of the song, where Arunagirinathar pleads with the Lord to save him from wasting his life in these hollow, painful pursuits.
6. The Cosmic Churning of the Milky Ocean
Shifting from worldly deceit to divine grandeur, the song transitions into a magnificent retelling of Hindu mythology. To highlight the greatness of Murugan’s lineage, the poet describes the churning of the cosmic Milky Ocean. The Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) used the massive Mount Meru (Mandara) as the churning rod. For the churning rope, they used Vasuki, the great serpent worn by Lord Shiva—the Supreme Deity who shares half of his body with Goddess Uma.
7. The Benevolence of Lord Vishnu
As the mighty ocean was churned—with Vali and the Asuras pulling the head of the snake, and the Devas pulling the tail—countless divine treasures emerged. These included Goddess Lakshmi, the wish-fulfilling Parijata tree, and various mystical powers (Siddhis). Ultimately, the divine nectar of immortality (Amirtham) surfaced. It was the deeply compassionate, green-hued Lord Vishnu who took charge of this massive endeavor and distributed the nectar. Arunagirinathar glorifies Murugan as the beloved nephew of this highly merciful Lord Vishnu.
8. The Majestic Lord of Keeranur
The hymn culminates in the praise of Lord Murugan’s abode and his divine form. Keeranur is described as an endlessly fertile and wealthy town, surrounded by grand, towering mansions and lush gardens blooming with flowers. In this flawless earthly paradise resides Lord Murugan, wielding his sacred weapon, the Vel (referred to as Saththi or Shakti), which represents ultimate spiritual wisdom. The poet surrenders to this magnificent Lord, seeking his eternal grace to overcome the miseries of mortal life.
Summary
Thiruppugazh 952 is a striking contrast between the deceptive nature of worldly lust and the eternal truth of divine grace. In the first half, Arunagirinathar masterfully exposes the manipulative tactics of courtesans—their fake smiles, flattering words, and calculated physical enticements—which only lead to spiritual and material ruin. Rejecting this path of sorrow, he shifts his focus to the heavens, beautifully recounting the mythology of the churning of the Milky Ocean orchestrated by Lord Vishnu. By invoking Murugan as the nephew of the merciful Vishnu and the wielder of the wisdom-granting Vel in the prosperous city of Keeranur, the poet prays for liberation from earthly illusions and the blessing of ultimate spiritual wisdom.
