The Essence of Thiruppugazh 81 pugarappungka (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is a Theological Synthesis. Arunagirinathar invokes the Holy Trinity (Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu) in the first half, describing their majestic states, and then prays to Murugan to grant him the “Konrai Garland”—the specific symbol of Lord Shiva’s grace—to clear his confused mind.

1. The Dweller of the Cloud-Capped Peak

Arunagirinathar begins by identifying the Supreme Lord Shiva. He describes the mountain (Mount Kailash or Meru) as “Pugarappunga Pagara Kundru”—a mountain famous for its beauty and the abundance of Punga (Punnai/Flower) trees. He describes Shiva as “Puyalil Thangi Polivonum”—the One who dwells and shines amidst the clouds on this peak. This establishes the celestial height and the unreachable majesty of the Father, Shiva.

2. The Chanter of the Vedic Refuge

The poet then describes Brahma, the Creator. He calls the Vedas “Poruvil Thanjam”—the Incomparable Refuge. Brahma is the one who expounds (Pugalvonum) the meaning (Porul) of these “Suruthi” (Sruti/Vedas) and the “Sangam” (Tamil literary works or the assembly of sages) with great “Panbu” (Culture/Grace). This highlights the aspect of Divine Knowledge and Creation.

3. The Sleeper with the Discus

Arunagirinathar describes the Protector, Lord Vishnu. He uses the word “Thigiri” (Circle/Discus) twice.

  • First, “Thigiri Sengai”: The Red Hand that holds the Discus (Sudarshana Chakra).
  • Second, “Seviyil Thunja”: He sleeps on the Serpent Bed (Adisesha), which is coiled in a circle. Vishnu is described as “Thirumal”, the Lord of Wealth/Lakshmi, who maintains cosmic order while in his yogic sleep.

4. The Prayer for the Garland of Clarity

This is the core prayer of the song. The poet addresses the “Waves of Confusion” in his mind. He says his mind is “Thiriya Pongi” (Wandering and bubbling up) like “Thirai” (Ocean waves). To calm this agitation and attain “Thelidhal” (Clarity), he asks Murugan to give him the “Konrai” (Golden Shower flower) garland.

  • Significance: The Konrai flower is the favorite of Lord Shiva. By asking Murugan for Shiva’s garland, the poet asserts that Murugan holds the ultimate authority to grant the Supreme Grace of Shiva.

5. The One Who Punished the Lotus-Dweller

The song shifts to Murugan’s exploits. The poet mentions “Thadana Nal Kanjam”—The Good/Large Lotus flower. The one who resides in it is Brahma. Murugan is described as the one who appeared on the peak (Sikarathil Thondri) to punish or imprison Brahma for his ego. This verse reinforces the idea that although Brahma expounds the Vedas (Verse 2), Murugan is the Guru who corrects even Brahma.

6. The Lover of the Young Hunter Girl

Arunagirinathar contrasts Murugan’s severity towards Brahma with His tenderness towards Valli. He mentions “Tharuna Kongai Kuravi”—The Hunter Girl (Valli) with youthful breasts. Murugan gave her “Inbam” (Bliss/Pleasure) and “Anbu” (Divine Love). He bestowed His grace (Arul) upon her. This shows that the Lord is easily accessible through love (Bhakti), while He is difficult to reach through mere intellect (like Brahma).

7. The Destroyer of the Golden Mountain

The poet describes the martial power of the Vel. He refers to the “Paim Pon Sikara Kundru”—The Mountain with Green and Gold Peaks (Mount Krauncha or Mount Meru). Murugan threw His Vel to make this massive mountain “Padiyil Sindha”—scatter into dust upon the earth. The Vel is described as “Thodum Vela”—the Spear that touches/strikes with precision to destroy the ego that blocks the soul’s path.

8. The Coral Walls of Tiruchendur

The song concludes with a vivid architectural description of the temple. Arunagirinathar describes Tiruchendur as a city surrounded by “Pavala Thunga Purisai”—High Walls made of Coral (or red like coral). The use of “Coral” links the temple to the sea. He addresses the Lord as “Kandha Perumale”—The Great Lord Skanda who resides safely within these red ramparts, ready to protect his devotees.

Summary

“Pugarappungka” is a song of Trinitarian Unity and Grace. Arunagirinathar acknowledges the roles of the Trinity: Shiva on the cloud-capped mountain, Brahma chanting the Vedas, and Vishnu sleeping with the Chakra. However, to cure the “ocean-like agitation” of his own mind, he turns to Murugan. He specifically asks Murugan for the “Konrai Garland” (symbol of Shiva’s grace) to bring clarity (Thelidhal) to his thoughts. The song glorifies Murugan as the one who humbled the Lotus-born Brahma, loved the Hunter Girl Valli, and shattered the Golden Mountain, reigning supreme within the coral walls of Tiruchendur
