The Essence of Thiruppugazh 798 Marukulāviya (Thiruvidaikkazhi)

This particular song is renowned for its relative simplicity and its intense focus on Vairagya (dispassion) and the yearning for the Lord’s presence. While other songs in this series are lengthy, this one serves as a concise, heartfelt plea for spiritual dignity and divine intervention.

The Distraction of the Fragrant Bed

The song begins with the word “MarukkulAviya,” referring to a bed of flowers permeated with fragrance. Arunagirinathar uses this as a symbol for sensory indulgence and lust. He prays, “KodhiyAdhE”—asking that his mind should no longer “boil” or “fume” with the heat of these desires. He recognizes that the pursuit of physical pleasure is not cooling but a scorching experience that agitates the soul and distracts it from its true purpose.

The Pain of Familial Reproach

The poet reflects on the social consequences of a life wasted in pursuit of the senses. He mentions the mother who raised him (vaLarththa thay) and his kinsmen (thamar). He prays that he may not be a target for their words of reproach or abuse (vasaiyadhu mozhiyAdhE). This highlights the psychological burden of failing one’s responsibilities and the shame that comes when loved ones lose respect for a seeker who has lost his way.

Avoiding the Slander of the World

Beyond the family, Arunagirinathar considers the broader community (ayalavar). He asks to be saved from a state where neighbors and strangers gossip about his moral or spiritual failings (pazhiyAdhE). In the context of “KarukkulAviya,” he hints at the cycle of birth (Karu); he seeks a life of such integrity that he is not mocked by those around him, thus preserving the dignity of a devotee of Murugan.

The Longing for the Kadamba Garland

The central request of the song is found here: “kadappa mAlaiyai inivara vidavENum.” The Kadamba garland is the signature ornament of Lord Murugan. To “send the Kadamba garland” is a poetic way of asking for the Lord’s grace, presence, and acceptance. The poet is tired of the “fragrant flower beds” of the world and now yearns for the “divine fragrance” of the Lord’s own garland to come and grace his life.

The Consort of the Divine Creeper

Arunagirinathar addresses Murugan as “maNavALA” (The Bridegroom/Husband). He describes the Lord’s consort (Valli) as having a waist as slender as a beautiful, swaying creeper (kodiyidai). This imagery serves a dual purpose: it celebrates the Lord’s role as the protector of the soul (represented by Valli) and reinforces the idea that true, divine union is far superior to the worldly unions the poet rejected in the first verse.

The Skillful Warrior of the Emerald Peacock

The poet praises the Lord’s brilliance by calling him “samarththanE” (The Capable/Skillful One). He visualizes Murugan as a hero (Veera) riding a peacock that glows with the hue of a precious emerald (marakatha mayil). This “Emerald Peacock” represents the vibrant, living energy of the universe. The Lord’s skill lies in His ability to steer this energy to destroy the ego and save the devotee from the “boiling” mind.

The Resident of the Sacred Shade

A recurring and vital theme in the Thiruvidaikkazhi songs is the Kurava Tree. The poet addresses Murugan as the one who resides in the shade of this sacred tree (thirukkurAvadi nizhal thanil uRaivOnE). In the scorching heat of worldly life and the “boiling” of desire, the shade of the Kurava tree represents the ultimate “coolness” of Spiritual Wisdom (Jnana). It is the sanctuary where the restless soul finally finds rest.

The Beauty of the Divine Spear

The song concludes with a salutation to the “VEl vadivazhagiya perumALE.” He praises the physical beauty of the Lord’s Hand-Spear (Vel). The Vel is not just a weapon but a form of beauty itself—the beauty of sharp, clear intelligence that cuts through the fog of “Vasai” (abuse) and “Pazhi” (slander). By calling Him Perumale, the poet surrenders his reputation and his heart to the Lord of Thiruvidaikkazhi.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 798 is a deeply personal prayer for Spiritual Dignity.

Arunagirinathar expresses a desire to move away from a life of “boiling” desires and the resulting social shame of being slandered by family and neighbors. He is tired of the worldly “flower beds” and instead begs the Lord to send His divine Kadamba garland as a sign of grace.

He visualizes the Lord as the skillful hero on the emerald peacock and the resident of the cool shade of the Kurava tree. The song is a plea for the Lord of the beautiful Spear to rescue the poet from the heat of the world and grant him the “cool” sanctuary of His presence at Thiruvidaikkazhi.
