The Essence of Thiruppugazh 795 pati punal nheruppu (thiruvitaikkalzhi)

In this song, Arunagirinathar provides a profound anatomical and philosophical critique of the human body to emphasize the need for divine refuge. He moves from the gross elements of matter to a plea for spiritual companionship with the realized devotees of Lord Murugan.

The Five Elemental Ingredients

The song begins by listing the fundamental building blocks of the universe: Earth (Padi), Water (Punal), Fire (Neruppu), Air (Pavanam), and Ether (Veli). The poet explains that these five elements combine to form the human body. However, he describes this combination not as a marvel, but as a “falsehood” (Poy), because it is temporary. This elemental analysis is meant to detach the devotee’s mind from the physical form by showing that the body is simply borrowed matter from nature.

The Mechanics of Karma and Qualities

Arunagirinathar explains that the soul enters this elemental body based on its “womb-birth” (Karuppu bavam) history. Once inside, the soul is governed by the three Gunas (Muk-guna): Sattva (purity), Rajas (passion), and Tamas (inertia). These qualities dictate our moods and actions. The poet laments that we are trapped in these states of mind (Avaththai), which fluctuate constantly, preventing us from attaining a steady state of spiritual peace.

The Anatomy of the “Skin Hut”

The poet provides a vivid, almost clinical description of the body’s internal components to induce Vairagya (dispassion). He describes the body as a “shack” or “hut” (Kudil) made of bone marrow (Machchai), reproductive fluids (Sukkilam), blood (Udhira), and fat (Ninachchada). He specifically notes that this “skin-hut” is perpetually plagued by hunger (Pasi) and disease (PiNigaL). By stripping away the external beauty of the skin, he reminds us that the body is a fragile, high-maintenance vessel.

The Fatigue of Endless Rebirth

Arunagirinathar expresses profound weariness regarding the cycle of reincarnation. He uses the phrase “Kadai peru pirappinuk” to describe the “lowly” nature of repeated births. He admits that he is like a “lowly dog” (Adinayen) who lacks the true wisdom (Unarvudaiya chiththamatru) to break free. He is exhausted from carrying the burden of this physical body through countless lifetimes, wandering aimlessly (Uzhalum) without a spiritual anchor.

The Request for Sacred Companionship

This is the heart of the poet’s petition. He asks Lord Murugan for two things: First, to grant him the vision of His twin ankleted feet (Kazhalinai). Second, and most importantly, he asks to be placed among the Lord’s true devotees (“Unadhu thamarokka vaithu”). Arunagirinathar realizes that spiritual progress is difficult alone; he seeks the company of the “Thamar” (the inner circle of realized souls) to stabilize his mind and protect him from falling back into worldly ways.

The Banner of the Valiant Rooster

The poet shifts to praising the Lord’s attributes. He addresses Murugan as the one who holds the Kukkuda Kodiyan—the Rooster Flag. In esoteric symbolism, the rooster’s crow represents the awakening of the soul from the sleep of ignorance. He describes Murugan’s shoulders as being like “mountains” (Buyagiri) entwined with the creepers of victory. This imagery suggests that the Lord is the ultimate pillar of strength for those who are weak and weary.

The Younger Brother of Ganesha

Arunagirinathar invokes Lord Ganesha to highlight Murugan’s divine lineage. He describes Ganesha as having a massive, mountain-like forehead (Thata vikata maththagam) that destroys the “mountains” of obstacles faced by devotees. He addresses Murugan as the “Adal Anuja”—the powerful younger brother. This relationship signifies that when one worships Murugan, they also receive the obstacle-removing grace of His elder brother, Ganesha.

The Lord of Thiruvidaikkazhi

The song concludes at the shrine of Thiruvidaikkazhi. The poet describes the Lord as the “Master of the Threefold Tamil” (Muththamizh pulavone) and the “Expert in the Science of Wisdom” (Viththagathuraivone). He calls Murugan the one who grants “Aruva Muththi”—formless liberation. By situating the Lord in this specific temple, he affirms that the resident deity of Thiruvidaikkazhi is the Physician who can heal the “disease of birth” described in the opening verses.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 795 is a powerful prayer for Spiritual Association.

The song begins with a stark, medical deconstruction of the human body, calling it a “shack of blood and marrow” built from five elements and plagued by hunger and disease. Arunagirinathar confesses his exhaustion with the cycle of birth and death, comparing his state to that of a wandering dog.

He finds hope by turning to Lord Murugan, the younger brother of Ganesha and the master of Tamil wisdom. His ultimate request is not just for personal salvation, but for Satsang—to be placed in the company of the Lord’s true devotees. He concludes that the Lord of Thiruvidaikkazhi is the only one who can grant the formless liberation that ends the soul’s long wandering.
