The Essence of Thiruppugazh 65 thunbangkoNduangkam (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a beautiful study in “Reciprocity of Surrender.” In the first half, the devotee surrenders to God to escape worldly sorrow. In the second half, God (Murugan) is shown surrendering to His devotee (Valli) out of pure love.
1. The Physical Decay of Sorrow
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the physiological price of a life lived in pursuit of sensory pleasure. He uses the phrase “Thunbam Kondu Angam Melinthu”—taking on sorrow until the limbs become thin and emaciated. He points out that what the world calls “enjoyment” often results in the body withering away due to exhaustion, anxiety, and disease. The poet emphasizes that the pursuit of lust is not a path to vitality, but a path to physical deterioration (Ara Nonthu—totally pained).
2. The Extinguishing of the Inner Light
The poet details the psychological loss accompanying this lifestyle. He says one forgets “Anbu” (Love/Affection) and “Panbu” (Culture/Good Character). When the mind is obsessed with base desires, it loses its refined qualities and social grace. The phrase “Oli Thunjum” is significant; it means the “Light Fades” or the “Intellect Sleeps.” The inner radiance of wisdom is extinguished by the darkness of ignorance and lust.
3. The Agitation of “Female Illusion”
Arunagirinathar identifies the specific cause of this suffering: “Pen Sanchalam.” Sanchalam means agitation, wavering, or worry. He prays not to approach (Anukathe) this state of constant emotional instability caused by infatuation with women. He asks to be saved from this wavering mind that oscillates between hope and despair in worldly relationships, seeking instead a state of mental stability.
4. The Feet Worshipped by the Creator
To counter the “fading light” of the soul, the poet seeks the “Radiant Feet” of Murugan. He describes these feet as “Umbar Thozhum Patha”—the feet worshipped by the Devas (Celestials). He specifically mentions “Kanchan” (The Golden One/Brahma, born in the Lotus). Brahma, the Creator, finds his “Thanjam” (Refuge/Surrender) at Murugan’s feet. The poet argues: “If the Creator of the Universe surrenders to You for safety, surely I should do the same.”
5. The Prayer for Eternal Service
Arunagirinathar clarifies his motivation. He does not ask for wealth or power; he asks for “Thondu” (Service). He prays, “Endrendrum Thondu Seyum Padi Arulvaye”—Grant me the grace to perform service unto You forever and ever. He realizes that the only way to escape the slavery of “Sanchalam” (Agitation) is to enter the slavery of “Thondu” (Divine Service). He seeks to exchange a painful master (Lust) for a blissful Master (Murugan).
6. The Lightning-Like Feet of Valli
The song shifts to a profound theological paradox. Murugan is the Lord to whom Brahma surrenders. Yet, this same Murugan surrendered to Valli, the Hunter Girl. Arunagirinathar describes Valli as “Kura Min”—The Lightning of the Kuravar tribe. Murugan saw her feet (Saranam Kandu) and declared, “You are my Refuge” (Thanjam Enum Padi). The poet highlights the beauty of Valli, describing her as one who took possession of Murugan’s “Part” or nature.
7. The Lord Who Bowed Down
Arunagirinathar marvels at Murugan’s humility. He describes the Lord as “Ninru Anbin… Adi Kumpidum Ilaiyone.” Standing in love, Murugan bowed down and worshipped the feet of Valli.
-
The Contrast: In verse 2, the supreme Creator Brahma bows to Murugan. In verse 3, Murugan bows to the devotee Valli. This illustrates the principle that God becomes a servant to His true devotee. He is the “Ilaiyone” (Younger Brother/Youth) who is conquered only by pure love (Anbu).
8. The Conch-Filled Hills of Chendur
The song concludes with a vivid description of Tiruchendur. It is described as “Paimpon Sinthu”—a place spilling with fresh gold (wealth/sands). The hill (Kundru) is covered with “Sangu Valampuri Pampum”—rare Valampuri (right-spiraling) conches that crawl everywhere. This imagery suggests that even the inanimate objects (shells) in Tiruchendur are auspicious (Valampuri) and abundant. The poet surrenders to this Perumale who resides in the golden, conch-filled southern city.
Summary
“ThunbangkoNduangkam” is a song of Reciprocal Love. Arunagirinathar starts by rejecting the “Agitation of Lust” (Pen Sanchalam) which destroys the body and extinguishes the inner light. He seeks refuge at Murugan’s feet, noting that even Brahma surrenders there. However, the song reaches its peak by revealing that this Supreme Lord Himself surrendered to the feet of Valli (Kura Min), driven by pure love. The poet prays to the Lord of Tiruchendur, where rare conches crawl on golden sands, to grant him the privilege of eternal service, just as He granted His servitude to Valli.
