The Essence of Thiruppugazh 638 Udukka Thukil (Kathirkamam)
This Thiruppugazh (Song 638 – “Udukka Thugil”), composed at the sacred shrine of Kathirkamam (Kataragama, Sri Lanka), is a masterpiece of contrast. The first half details the mundane, repetitive struggle of human existence, focused on satisfying the body and family. The second half shifts dramatically to the epic Ramayana, describing the singular focus and devotion of Hanuman. Arunagirinathar draws a parallel between the saving grace of Lord Rama’s ring sent to Sita and the saving grace he seeks from Lord Muruga.
1. The Endless Cycle of Bodily Needs
The song opens with a realistic list of human necessities that consume our daily lives. Arunagirinathar observes that we constantly need “Thugil” (clothes) to cover our modesty, heavy food and drink (“Kana Baanam”) to quench deep hunger, and water (“Punal”) to bathe and keep the body radiant. We also frantically seek “Parikaram” (remedies/medicine) to cure the diseases that inevitably afflict this physical frame. The poet highlights how the maintenance of the body becomes a full-time occupation.
2. The Trap of Domestic Life
Beyond physical needs, the soul seeks social and emotional anchors. The poet notes the desire for a “Siru Naari” (a wife/partner) to manage the home and a “Thani Veedu” (a private house) to sleep and live in comfort. Once these are attained, the individual becomes a “Gruhavasi”—a householder. While this is a natural stage of life, Arunagirinathar warns that without spiritual awareness, it becomes a cage where one gets stuck in the routine of comfort-seeking.
3. Drowning in the Ocean of Attachment
The poet describes family life as a “Mayakka Kadal”—an Ocean of Delusion. A person spends their entire life acting as a “Paripalan” (guardian/caretaker) for their “Kilai” (relatives/branches of the family tree). In this endless struggle to please and protect kith and kin, the precious life force (“Uyir”) is wasted in vain (“Avame Pom”), leaving no time for spiritual elevation or liberation.
4. A Plea for Grace and Wisdom
Realizing the futility of this cycle, Arunagirinathar prays for a breakthrough. He describes himself as swirling inside the “Oozh Bhava Giri”—the Mountain of Karma and Birth. To escape this, he begs the Lord to call him and grant two things: “Krupai Chitham” (A mind of compassion/Grace) and “Gnana Bodham” (Divine Wisdom). He asks to be ruled and saved by the Lord at least for one day, breaking the chain of karma.
5. The Global Search for Sita
The song then shifts to a majestic retelling of a Ramayana episode. After Sita was abducted, Sugriva sent his Vanara (monkey) armies in all directions. The poet describes the command: “Search the West (Kudakku), search the North (Vadakku), search the East (Gunakku).” Vast armies were dispatched to these corners to find the whereabouts of the Goddess.
6. Hanuman: The Intuitive Messenger
While others were sent elsewhere, “Maruthi” (Hanuman) was chosen for the most difficult direction—the South. The poet describes Hanuman as one who “Kurippil Kuri Kaanum”—one who understands the deeper, unspoken intentions of the Lord. There was a silent understanding that only Hanuman had the capability to cross the ocean and return. The line implies Hanuman’s resolve: he would not dare return (“Varalamo”) if his mission to find the sign of Sita failed.
7. The Courageous Encounter in Lanka
Hanuman is described as a “Dheeran” (Hero) who did not tire or falter before the “Arakkar” (Demons) who guarded Lanka. He infiltrated the city and went specifically to the “Vanam” (Ashoka Vana), the forest garden where the Mother (Sita) was held captive. This section celebrates the fearlessness of the true devotee who enters enemy territory to serve his Lord.
8. The Divine Ring and the Lord of Kathirkamam
The climax of the song is the delivery of hope. Hanuman presented Sita with the “Arul Pon Thiru Aazhi”—the Divine Golden Ring (Signet Ring of Rama). This act brought immense “Manoharam” (delight/comfort) to her heart. Arunagirinathar concludes by identifying Lord Muruga of Kathirkamam with this act of grace. By calling Muruga “Perumale” in this context, he suggests that Muruga possesses the same saving power as Rama and can deliver the “ring of wisdom” to the suffering soul.
Summary
This hymn serves as a bridge between mundane suffering and divine rescue.
- The Problem: Arunagirinathar laments how human life is wasted in a never-ending loop of seeking food, clothes, shelter, and taking care of relatives, leaving the soul trapped in the “Mountain of Karma.”
- The Solution: He invokes the imagery of Hanuman from the Ramayana. Just as Hanuman crossed the ocean and delivered Rama’s Golden Ring to save Sita from her sorrow in Lanka, the poet asks the Lord of Kathirkamam to deliver the Grace of Wisdom to save him from the sorrow of birth. It is a prayer to be rescued from the “Ocean of Delusion” by the ultimate Hero.
