The Essence of Thiruppugazh 59 sEmakkOmaLa (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a profound mixture of Philosophy (Siddhanta) and Mythology (Purana). Arunagirinathar questions the human obsession with the perishable body and negative emotions, contrasting it with the eternal safety found at Murugan’s feet.
1. The Safety of the Tender Lotus Feet
Arunagirinathar begins by focusing on the ultimate refuge: the Feet of Lord Murugan. He describes them as “Sema” (Safety/Protection) and “Komala” (Tender/Beautiful). He notes that the “Anantha Vedha” (Endless Vedas) are constantly chanting and searching to reach (Serthatku) these very feet. The implication is that the vast knowledge of the scriptures ultimately points to a single destination: the protective, tender feet of the Lord.
2. The Trinity’s Quest
The opening lines also contain a subtle wordplay. The phrase “Semak Komala” can be interpreted to refer to the search by the Trinity.
- Se: The Red One (Lakshmi/Wealth).
- Ma: The Great One.
- A-Nanthan: The Endless One (Vishnu or Brahma). The poet suggests that even the greatest cosmic powers are reciting hymns to attain the shelter of Murugan’s feet, highlighting that He is the Supreme Brahman sought by all divinities.
3. The Trap of the Three Poisons
The poet shifts his gaze to the sad state of humanity. He observes that people do not develop love (Anbu) for “Guna Seelam” (Good Character) or for removing “Theethu” (Evil) and “Virodham” (Enmity). Instead, they are consumed by the “Three Poisons” of spiritual life:
- Kama: Lust/Desire.
- Krodha: Anger/Wrath.
- Lobha: Greed/Miserliness. Arunagirinathar laments that humanity is perishing (Azhigindra) in the illusion caused by these elemental distortions (Bhutha Vikaram).
4. The Mystery of Bonding to the Body
Arunagirinathar uses Saiva Siddhanta terminology here. He mentions “Pasu” (The Soul/Beast) and “Pasam” (The Rope/Bondage). He asks a rhetorical question: “Why do some people fall in love (Kamutrey) with this ‘Kayam’ (Body)?” The body is merely a vessel bound by the rope of ignorance (Pasa). He wonders aloud, “En Kolothan” (What is the meaning/reason for this?), expressing his bewilderment at how the soul prefers the prison of the body over the freedom of the Lord.
5. The Pulverizing of Mount Meru
The song transitions to the martial glory of Murugan. The poet describes the destruction of the demon Surapadman, who wielded a “Nemi” (Chakra/Wheel) and assumed various illusory forms. Murugan destroyed him and also pulverized Mount Meru (Meru Thool Ezha) into dust. This signifies the Lord’s power to destroy not just enemies, but the “Mountain of Ego” that blocks the soul’s progress.
6. The Rider of the Blue-Necked Peacock
Arunagirinathar describes the vehicle of the Lord in vivid detail. He mentions the “Neela Kalabu Yangakaala”—referring to the black cobra that is consumed or held by the peacock. He describes the Peacock as “Neela Greeva” (Blue-Necked). Murugan drives this “Ratha” (Chariot/Vehicle) with majesty. He is the “Neeba Sevaga”—the Warrior who wears the garland of Kadamba flowers. The poet hails Him as the “Senthil Vazhve” (The very Life/Prosperity of Tiruchendur).
7. The Reward of the Sacrificial Fire
The poet connects Murugan to the Vedic tradition. He mentions those who faultlessly tend to the “Oma Thee” (Homa/Sacrificial Fire). To such righteous souls, the Divine Mother (Parvati/Mangai) grants the realm of Shiva Loka. Murugan is addressed as “Mangai Bala”—the Son of that Goddess. This confirms that worshipping Murugan is the fruit of all Vedic sacrifices and the path to the highest heaven.
8. The Guru of the Mute Devas
The song concludes with the title “Yogatharu Padesa Desika.” Murugan is the Desika (Guru) who teaches the path of Yoga and the ultimate truth. He is called the Master of the “Umaith Thevargal” (The Mute Devas).
- Interpretation: This refers to the Devas who were rendered “dumb” or helpless by the terror of Surapadman. Murugan restored their voice and status.
- Spiritual Meaning: It can also refer to the “Mauna” (Silence) of the realized souls. Murugan is the Master of those who have transcended speech to reach the Divine Silence.
Summary
“SemakkomaLa” is a song of True Refuge. Arunagirinathar wonders why humans cling to the “Three Poisons” (Lust, Anger, Greed) and the perishable body (Pasu-Pasa), when the Vedas themselves are searching for the safe, tender feet of Lord Murugan. He glorifies Murugan as the warrior who pulverized Mount Meru and the Guru who teaches Yoga. The song establishes that the Lord of Tiruchendur is the ultimate destination, granting safety (Sema) to those who escape the illusion of the body to surrender at His feet.
