The Essence of Thiruppugazh 41 karikkombam (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is renowned for its rhythmic complexity. It is composed in a “Vanna” meter, characterized by hard, percussive sounds (K, P, T, R). The song contrasts the “Heavy Burden” of worldly lust with the “Heavy Power” of Murugan’s valour.

1. The Burden of the Elephant Tusks

Arunagirinathar begins with a heavy metaphor. He compares the physical features of women to “Karikkompan” (Elephant Tusks) and “Kudam” (Pots). While poets usually use these as terms of praise, Arunagirinathar uses them to signify weight and danger. He describes the shoulders as having “Chem Pori” (Red Spots/Golden complexion), but emphasizes that these features act as a heavy burden on the observer’s mind, crushing his spiritual freedom just as a tusker elephant might crush an obstacle.

2. The Conch-Neck and The Arrow-Eyes

The poet details the sensory entrapment. He describes eyes that act like arrows (Kanaikkum), piercing the heart of the devotee. He mentions the neck, which is shaped like a Sangu (Conch Shell). The earrings (Pon Kuzhai) swing back and forth, creating a mesmerizing effect. This verse illustrates how the human mind is captured by moving ornaments and sharp glances, mistaking biological features for divine beauty.

3. The Polished Exterior (Minukku)

Arunagirinathar exposes the artificiality of attraction. He uses the word “Minukku” (Polishing/Glittering). He describes how women dress in gold-threaded garments (Pon Thugil) and decorate their bodies (Sadathu) to create an illusion of perfection. The phrase “Sarakkum Sambudaikkum” implies that this is all a “Commodity” or a “Package” wrapped in gold to hide the impermanent flesh beneath. It is a theatrical makeup designed to deceive the soul.

4. The Fatigue of Deceit

The poet describes the psychological exhaustion of a lustful relationship. He lists the behaviors: “Salithum” (Getting tired/bored), then “Sirithum” (Faking a smile), “Azhaithum” (Calling/Inviting), and finally “Pasappum” (Speaking deceitful, sweet words). Arunagirinathar asks, “Must I roll and suffer (Kuzhalveno) in this trap of women who only show affection when they want something, and feign love with deceitful words?”

5. The Chant of the Five and Six Letters

The song shifts from the noise of the world to the chant of the divine. Arunagirinathar mentions the “Surar Sangam” (The assembly of Devas). They worship Murugan by chanting the “Anchu Ezhuthu” (The Five Letters: Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya) and the Six Letters (Sa-Ra-Va-Na-Bha-Va). By holding onto these mantras, they find joy (Kali) and sustenance (Unn). The poet implies that the mouth used to praise women in the earlier verses should instead be used to chant these liberating mantras.

6. The Smashing of the Asuras

Arunagirinathar describes the aggressive power of Murugan. He uses percussive words like “Thuvaithum” (Smashing/Trampling) and “Thadithum” (Beating/Punishing). Murugan sounds his war conch (Sangu Olithum)—a sharp contrast to the “Conch-Neck” of the women mentioned in verse 2. He splits the Krauncha Mountain (Kunru Idithum) to destroy the demons. This verse serves to show that Murugan’s power can smash the “mountain of karma” just as easily as He smashed the mountains of the Asuras.

7. The Giver of Divine Qualities (Panbu)

This is a beautiful theological verse. Arunagirinathar asks Murugan to grant him specific “Panbu” (Qualities/Nature). He asks for:

  1. Sirappu Panbu: The quality of Excellence/Greatness.
  2. Karappu Panbu: The power of concealment (or the ability to erase bad karma).
  3. Siva Panbu: The auspicious nature of Lord Shiva.
  4. Thava Panbu: The inclination towards penance and meditation. He asks the Lord, who wears the Kadamba garland, to replace his “Lustful Nature” with these “Divine Natures.”

8. The Joy of Valli and Deivayanai

The song concludes at Tiruchendur. The poet describes Murugan’s two consorts. He mentions the “Kurappen” (Valli, the Hunter Girl) associated with the millet fields (Thinai) and the “Sasi Pen” (Deivayanai, the daughter of Indra/Sasi). Murugan finds joy in the chest (Kongai) of these two shaktis (Ichcha Shakti and Kriya Shakti). The poet surrenders to the Perumale who resides in the flourishing (Sezhikkum) temple of Chendur.

Summary

“Karikkombam” is a song of Rhythmic Transformation. Arunagirinathar uses heavy, percussive language to describe the “Heavy Burden” of lust—the weight of elephant-tusk-like breasts and the exhaustion of deceitful relationships. He contrasts this with the “Heavy Power” of Lord Murugan—the One who smashes mountains and demons. The poet prays to be lifted from the “Deceitful Nature” (Pasappu) of the world and gifted with the “Shiva Nature” (Siva Panbu) and “Ascetic Nature” (Thava Panbu) by the Lord of Tiruchendur.
